In Search of Wales

Another great sleep in the caravan and the wake up to chickens clucking away and another beautiful blue bird day.  Who said it rains all the time in England!  Alyssa popped out of bed the second she heard Rich’s mom up so she could help feed the horses, chickens, pigs and lambs.  She also had to collect eggs for our breakfast this morning.  We had breakfast and slowly packed up to hit the road toward Wales and into Pembrokeshire.  It’s supposed to be a sleepy beachside area that used to be what Cornwall used to be a number of years ago.  So with Rich as my new navigator we hit the road west.

We stopped off at a Kyte sanctuary where they feed the birds every day at 3 pm.  When we first got there you could see a couple of birds in the sky.  By the time we had a snack and a little walk about, there were twenty to thirty birds.  And just like clockwork, just before 3, there was over 80 Kytes.  It
was pretty cool as they threw out the meat, the birds dropped out of the sky to grab their meal.  They’d eat it in the air before swooping back down for another bite.  It was pretty wild to watch how they would make their approach and cycle through.  After that, we headed further west and south toward Fishguard.

Fishguard is a smaller fishing community
right on the ocean.  It’s got some crazy streets, as most areas on this island I’m finding, and somehow we managed to find a grocery store to stock up for a few meals.  Further west to a super small town called Trefin where we found our hostel and started cooking up our dinner, buttered chicken or chicken and rice for the girls.  The hostel must be the best equipped I’ve ever seen.  All stainless steel counters and every pot, plate or implement you could think of.  Even the cutting boards are labelled for their different uses, raw meat, veggies, bread, etc.  Each room comes with you own set of earplugs and is adorned in different themes.  Ours just happens to be a tree, forests theme... kind of fitting don’t you think?!  After dinner was a nice stroll around town and check out the Pembrokeshire national park trail which is only 5 minutes from the hostel.  This town has one pub, a cafe and a phone booth and that is about it.  Pretty quiet and quaint, just what we were looking for to get our quiet, country time in before heading into London in a few days.
